Types of Eye Specialists
There are four types of eye specialists at Eye Care who provide vision care to our adult and children patients.
- Ophthalmologist: An ophthalmologist is a medical doctor who provides eye care, such as complete eye exams, prescribing corrective lenses, diagnosing and treating eye diseases. Many ophthalmologists also perform eye surgical procedures such as cataract surgery, LASIK, and lens implant surgery.
- Optometrist: An optometrist is a health care professional who can provide complete eye exams, prescribe corrective lenses, diagnose common eye disorders, and treat selected eye diseases. Optometrists do not treat more complex eye problems or perform surgery.
- Oculofacial Plastic Surgeon: An Oculofacial Plastic Surgeon is a medical doctor board certified in ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgery. Oculofacial plastic surgery is the correction of eye problems through the use of reconstructive surgery. The primary goal is to restore function while improving eye and facial appearance.
- Optician: An optician assembles, fits, sells, and fills prescriptions for eyeglasses.
